Set against the backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution, a secret military project sends signals into space to establish contact with aliens. An alien civilization on the brink of destruction captures the signal and plans to invade Earth. Meanwhile, on Earth, different camps start forming, planning to either welcome the superior beings and help them take over a world seen as corrupt, or to fight against the invasion.

ScoiattoloRated The Three-Body Problem 10/10Beautifully well done. The story's strength arises when you consider it's historical context, set against the Cultural Revolution and informed by Chinese values. A timely undercurrent of the story is the role of elite nihilism and populist fervor in perpetuating the destructiveness of revolution, particularly the former who seek to convince the latter to burn everything down as punishment for society's sins & incorrect thought. The warning is apt, universal, & stark.大约 2 个月前

Marco AlmadaRated The Three-Body Problem 10/10An impressive mix of hard-ish Science Fiction and historical narratives, with a significant part of the plot set in Cultural Revolution-era China. Some of the present-day characters feel a bit unidimensional, but others get a treatment almost as good as the fascinating world-building done by the author, which becomes even clearer with the helpful translator's notes on cultural aspects. All in all, this is a great contemporary sci-fi opus which touches a theme that seems to be back in vogue: Humanity turning its collective focus (back?) to space and its mysteries.
