Educated is an account of the struggle for self-invention. It is a tale of fierce family loyalty, and of the grief that comes from severing one’s closest ties. With the acute insight that distinguishes all great writers, Westover has crafted a universal coming-of-age story that gets to the heart of what an education is and what it offers: the perspective to see one’s life through new eyes, and the will to change it.

Another understanding of self-awareness, improving, and education.

My Kindle Notes & Highlights

Educated
by Tara Westover

Not knowing for certain, but refusing to give way to those who claim certainty, was a privilege I had never allowed myself. My life was narrated for me by others. Their voices were forceful, emphatic, absolute. It had never occurred to me that my voice might be as strong as theirs.

It’s strange how you give the people you love so much power over you, I had written in my journal. But Shawn had more power over me than I could possibly have imagined. He had defined me to myself, and there’s no greater power than that.

Everything I had worked for, all my years of study, had been to purchase for myself this one privilege: to see and experience more truths than those given to me by my father, and to use those truths to construct my own mind. I had come to believe that the ability to evaluate many ideas, many histories, many points of view, was at the heart of what it means to self-create. If I yielded now, I would lose more than an argument. I would lose custody of my own mind. This was the price I was being asked to pay, I understood that now. What my father wanted to cast from me wasn’t a demon: it was me.

But vindication has no power over guilt. No amount of anger or rage directed at others can subdue it, because guilt is never about them. Guilt is the fear of one’s own wretchedness. It has nothing to do with other people.

Sara Habein
Sara HabeinRated Educated 10/10This was a captivating, albeit depressing read for my last book of 2019. I hope all these damaged children mentioned, even in passing as children of her siblings still in the throes of the family business, will be ok. Westover's ability to get out and discover the special capabilities of her own mind is truly admirable. I don't quite understand why people say they "LOVED" this, as it's a real family's suffering, but I'm still glad to have read it.

12 hours。

I'm glad I don't miss it this time.

You can love someone and still choose to say goodbye.”

It’s hard to imagine how powerful and long lasting that the control of the parents over their children. Don’t ever try to change someone you love but also mistreated you especially your parents. By trying itself is giving them power to control you. Stay away from toxic people before you lose your sanity. Toxic parents will drive you crazy.

Cognitive dissonance
